The Shaw Prize Clearing the COVID-19 Hurdle by Turning the 2020 Award Ceremony Virtual

5 May 2021

2020 was a remarkably difficult year. The COVID-19 pandemic has wreaked havoc on every aspect of life and stripped us of the opportunity to come together for the awaited annual Award Ceremony. Navigating the impact of COVID-19, the Shaw Prize forges ahead in embracing the “new normal”, which is to turn the Ceremony virtual. The 2020 Shaw Prize Award Ceremony, which marks the seventeenth year of the award, will be a whole new experience for every one of us. The six Shaw Laureates will receive their prizes at home and their acceptance speeches, together with the messages given by other speakers, will be presented to you online and livestreamed on the day of the Ceremony.

It is a blessing in disguise that the COVID-19 situation allows us to connect with an even larger audience this year via our digital platforms. The new format provides viewers from across the globe with easy accessiblity to the event and permits them to pay tribute to the Laureates without compromising their health and safety. The Shaw Prize truly believes that the celebration of scientific triumph is borderless, and with your participation, we are able to bring forward more seminal accomplishment in astronomy, life science and medicine, and mathematical sciences by outstanding scientists.
