Professor Tom Zhi-Quan Luo, a Member of The Shaw Prize Council, was awarded the inaugural Hua Prize at ICCM (International Consortium of Chinese Mathematics) 2025. He shared the Prize with another recipient, Professor Chi-Wang Shu, from Brown University, US.
Professor Luo was renowned for his outstanding contributions in optimisation, big data, signal processing, and wireless communications. In 2020, Professor Luo introduced a pioneering data-driven approach to wireless network optimisation, integrating statistical network models with artificial intelligence. This innovative methodology has been deployed in over 30 countries, optimising 1.8 million base stations worldwide. His work has improved wireless network performance for a quarter of the global population, significantly reduced operational costs and carbon emissions for telecom operators, and generated substantial economic and social benefits on a global scale.
Professor Luo is currently the Vice President (Academic) of The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen, and concurrently the Director of Shenzhen Research Institute of Big Data and also the Executive Director of the Shenzhen Loop Area Institute. He joined The Shaw Prize Council in May 2025.
The Hua Prize, together with the Chern Prize and Lin Prize, is listed as the three main awards of ICCM to award Chinese mathematicians older than 45 years. It is established to commemorate Professor Loo-keng Hua, known as the “Father of Modern Chinese Mathematics”, who has brought international reputation to Chinese mathematics. The award focuses on Chinese mathematicians worldwide over the age of 45 who have made pioneering achievements in various fields.
The ICCM was established in 1998 by Professor Shing-Tung Yau to promote and advance mathematics within the extended Chinese community and to build good relationships between Chinese mathematicians and other mathematicians throughout the world. Professor Yau was awarded the Shaw Prize in Mathematical Sciences 2023.
