Winners of international design competition announced
 

Dr Patrick C P Ho, JP, Secretary for Home Affairs, HKSAR, today (3 November) presented prizes in an international competition held to design The Shaw Prize logo, medal, trophy and diploma. Taiwan designers Royce Hong and Grace Cheung with their design 'The Looking Glass of Human Endeavour' won first prize. Second and third prizes were awarded respectively to 'Better Tomorrow, Brighter Future' by William Ho Design Associates Limited and 'New Frontiers of Human Civilization' submitted by CoDesign Ltd, both Hong Kong design firms. Mr Wang Xu from Guangzhou gained a Special Recognition Prize for exemplary originality with his 'The Joy of the New Century'.
 
A four-member international jury panel adjudicated on 37 entries from Britain, Germany, Japan, Malaysia, the United States, China, Hong Kong and Taiwan. The judges were: Professor Sheila Levrant de Bretteville of Yale University's School of Art, Mr Ju Ming, the world-renowned Taiwan sculptor, Ms Grace Kao, a veteran artist and educator, and Mr Henry Steiner, an influential graphic designer in the Pacific Rim.
 
The competition, sponsored by The Shaw Prize Foundation Limited and organized by the School of Creative Media at City University, Hong Kong, took place between July and September this year.
 
The Shaw Prize is an international award established by Mr Run Run Shaw to honour scientists who have made a distinguished contribution to modern civilization. At present there are three prizes in: Astronomy, Life Science and Medicine, and Mathematical Sciences, to be presented annually commencing September 2004.
